Pedestrians in Arizona have a higher chance of dying than anywhere else in the country. Out of the 2,636 pedestrian deaths in the United States in the first half of 2017, 113 of them were in Arizona.
The numbers from the Arizona Governor’s Office of Highway Safety’s latest study shows that comes out to a pedestrian death rate of 1.61 per 100,000 people, almost double the national average.
Arizona, California, Florida, Texas and New York accounted for almost half of all pedestrian deaths in the United States from January to June 2017. These five states represent only about 43 percent of the nation’s population.
Total pedestrian deaths in the U.S. almost reached 6,000 in 2017 for the second straight year. The study also shows that pedestrian deaths are growing faster than traffic deaths, which have seen a recent decline.
The spike comes despite improvements in the safety of vehicles including automatic braking systems, collision alert technology and rearview cameras.
The Reason for The High Rate of Pedestrian Deaths
no scientific evidence, experts believe distracted driving is to blame. Specifically, smartphones and marijuana.
Texting and talking on your cell phone while driving is no doubt dangerous but combine that with drugged or drunk driving, it’s a recipe for disaster.
Night driving is also a contributing factor to pedestrian fatalities with about 75 percent of accidents happening in the evening. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has flagged poor headlights as a major factor followed by poor design and failure to adopt lights that swivel around a curved road.
Distracted pedestrians are to blame, sometimes, as well. Many are hit because they’re distracted with texting or talking on a smartphone while crossing a street.
Of course, with all of the growth in the valley, more cars are on the road and more people are walking.
